Introduction

The M.A. Sociology program at Smt. Indira Gandhi College is a two-year postgraduate degree designed to provide a deep understanding of social structures, institutions, and contemporary social issues.

It offers a balanced combination of theoretical, methodological, and applied sociology, emphasizing both classical and modern sociological thought. The program aims to develop critical awareness of social processes, inequality, development, gender, and cultural change, preparing students for professional careers in academia, research, NGOs, social work, and policy analysis.

Research & Project Component

Students undertake a research project or dissertation in the final semester. Field studies and surveys form an integral part of the program, allowing students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world social contexts.

Each student works under a faculty supervisor and presents their findings through a viva-voce examination.

Each student is assigned a faculty mentor for guidance on academics, research, and career planning. The department also offers:
